| SBC and Verizon are incumbent telephone
companies. If either of these are your telephone company, they are the quickest way to get
up and running with DSL. New Edge Networks and Covad are alternative service providers that have special DSL and T1 products that have a farther reach and can provide service in areas that the incumbents can't. |
| ADSL service can be used on any existing phone line in your home or office. ADSL is limited to 16,000 feet from your local telephone company's central office. The speeds listed are in the format of download (to your computer) / upload (from you computer). | IDSL service is provided on a separate data-quality line to your home or office. The cost of the data line is included in the price of the service. IDSL is a specialty service that, while not as fast as ADSL, can reach customers who are over twice as far from your telephone company's central office (up to 30,000 feet!). IDSL speeds are synchronous - download and upload speeds are the same. |
